Chapter Thirteen

Fayez narrowed his eyes right back at the older woman who just happened to be the mother of the woman he adored. “Article?” he repeated smoothly, while his stomach gave a sickening lurch of premonition.

She waved a hand toward the coffee table, where a local newspaper sat unopened. “See for yourself.”

Even from where he stood the front page was all too clear. It was an image of Fayez at the races, a computer generated love-heart surrounding him and the women, Jazmina and Takisha, who stood either side of him.

He growled like an animal as he strode toward the offending paper, then bent to read the headline.

Princess Takisha or Mistress Jazmina. Who will Sheikh Fayez choose?

His fists clenched at his sides, his jaw tight as he went on to read the offending article beneath.

Everyone is talking about the long-lived affair between Sheikh Fayez Al-Khan and his mistress Jazmina Fadel. There is much speculation about how much longer their relationship will last before Princess Takisha finally steps in and gives him an ultimatum.

The princess hasn’t been shy in giving her opinion. “He’ll want a real family one day, just as his people want a real princess by his side. And though I believe every man needs to sow his wild oats, he can’t ignore his duty to his people forever…the same people who know I won’t wait forever. We’ve all been patient for long enough.”

His chest tightened as fury burned through his blood. The damn princess had deliberately ignited a debate to incense his people and force his hand into marrying her.

Not. Going. To. Happen.

That the very same newspaper he’d spoken to previously to get them to delete an article about Jazmina had now decided to print something even more inflammatory was unacceptable.

One issue at a time.

He pulled out his cellphone and glanced at Jazmina and her mother. That Jaz would read that same article the moment he turned his back couldn’t be helped now. The damage was already done and he had to take action before it became irreparable. “If you’ll excuse me, I have a phone call I need to make.”

Heads would roll that no one, not even his damn advisors, had thought to inform him of this latest PR mess.

Jazmina nodded stiffly, while her mother arched a brow and said, “By all means.”

He nodded and strode toward a sliding door. He opened it to a large backyard, where an entertaining deck gave way to steps and an expansive lawn. A table and chairs sat invitingly beneath a rotunda close to the river.

Not that he really noticed any of it. As soon as his chief advisor, Jubair, answered his phone, Fayez got down to business.

“We need to talk,” he said tightly.

He disconnected the call ten minutes later, shattered by the news. Little wonder his advisors had put off telling him the truth. If it was bad enough that Princess Takisha was adding fuel to the fire, her father’s threat to align sides with an enemy country if Fayez didn’t announce his intention to marry Takisha was a disaster of monumental proportions.
